Sunshine Vibes

Sunshine Vibes was painted to remind us of the simple pleasures of al fresco dining when the sun is out.  We had a loooong winter this year and a lot of rain so feeling the sunshine is the best medicine.  Strawberries are summer in a fruit and always remind me of Wimbledon and picnics, and so here they are to bring you some sunshine.  Paired with a refreshing drink, they make a fab accompaniment to a summer gathering.

This is an acrylic on deep canvas and measures 100 x 100cm and is ready to hang.

When David Hockney came to Coffee

David Hockney is something of a legend in my eyes — a passionate observer of the beauty in the world, whose prolific career I find endlessly inspiring. On a recent visit to the Tate Britain in London, I treated myself to a small book of his thoughts on art and the world. I was struck by his astute observations and eloquence, as much as by the richness and colour of his paintings. I am not a big reader, but I could not put it down on the train ride home, and it has since become a joy to dip into.

A few days later, while sharing coffee with a friend, the sun caught my yellow coffee pot and illuminated the book beside it. In that moment I could see the painting that needed to be made.

As I painted the scene, I realised I wanted the book to become the focal point. When the coffee cup obscured his name on the cover, it gave me licence to write it playfully into the margin instead. Throughout the painting I’ve included small nods to Hockney — references to some of his well-known works, his distinctive glasses, and of course his name and the book itself.

And so there could really be no other title for this piece than When David Hockney Came to Coffee.

It is acrylic on deep-edged canvas and measures 60 x 60cm.

Sweet like Candy

“Sweet like Candy” refers to how delightful this bunch of flowers are, and also how the belly-button yellows and swirling lisianthus remind me of a sweet shop.  Whenever I go into a florist I do really feel like a kid in a sweet shop – so many pops of colour and the scents that fill the air are dreamy.  This colourful bunch was painted in Dartmouth, in front of the art society and I think their warmth and friendliness, only added to the paint itself.  It overflows with colour and really is Sweet like Candy.

It is acrylic on deep canvas, 60 x 60 cm, with a yellow side trim – they glow in the light and there is so much to take in when you look closely, from japonica flowers, to dahlias, to lisianthus,  a fern, willow, eucalyptus and yellow belly-buttons (though perhaps that is not their Latin name!).

Dahlias have Eight not just a Pear!

I picked up this lovely bunch of unique and gorgeous dahlias from the Force charity shop in Heavitree where I live.  They are grown by Rowan, who I met this year, and who kindly invited me to visit her incredible meadow of dahlias.  She shared with me that dahlias are fascinating due to their exceptional genetic complexity, because unlike most living organisms (including us humans), which usually have only two sets, dahlias have a whopping eight sets of chromosomes. This complexity results in almost limitless genetic possibilities and the vast diversity of blooms seen in dahlia flowers.  This bunch was no exception with a myriad of peachy pinks and yellows, they were a joy to brighten my home and apparently may have contained a never-before seen dahlia!

The deep-edged canvas is 60 x 90cm and painted in acrylics with a protective gloss varnish.  It is ready to hang and fly. xxx

love

In May 2025 I ran a flower painting workshop and was fortunate enough to pick an absolute corker of a bunch of flowers from Floren in Exeter – stunning pink peonies, thistle type flowers and a spattering of cute white daisies.  I fell so heavily in love with the vase of flowers that I just had to paint it alongside my workshop attendees (between supporting them).  When a feeling hits you and you roll with it, I find the art just happens and this little painting sums this up.  In one simple word it is “love”.

It’s acrylic on canvas 27.5cm x 35.5cm and is varnished and ready to hang.  I have a brilliant framer I know, so can get this bespoke framed should you wish.
